Crossrail Mitigates Risk and Cuts Safety Management Costs by 60% with Cohesive

Cohesive’s ComplyPro platform streamlined hazard management, enabling collaboration and a single data source, significantly lowering costs and enhancing safety

Cohesive provided Crossrail with a Program-Wide Hazard Management capability using our Progressive Assurance platform, ComplyPro. This system enabled collaboration between multiple teams, maintaining a single source of truth” for up-to-date safety hazard information. As a result, the average cost of engineering safety management was reduced by 60%, achieving a step change” in safety engineering management and ensuring the highest levels of safety.

The Challenge

Crossrail, one of the most complex rail infrastructure programs ever undertaken, faced significant challenges in identifying potential hazards and mitigating risks. Tracking safety hazards and establishing an effective workflow for engineering and safety management evidence proved particularly difficult.

Our Solution

As the incumbent provider of requirements engineering and assurance solutions at Crossrail, Cohesive implemented a Program-Wide Hazard Management System based on ComplyPro. This platform facilitated collaboration among multiple teams and maintained a centralized repository of current safety hazard information. The system documented all identified hazards, providing future Crossrail operators and infrastructure managers (IMs) with the necessary evidence for Safety Justifications, crucial for developing safe operating controls and procedures.

“Our highly experienced team of systems and safety engineers believe the Safety Management System represents a major innovation in the field, overcoming the many challenges that face major projects in managing this hugely complex and difficult task. Such has been its success on the project that a number of important related processes and procedures are reliant on its availability and reliability.”

The Client Benefits

Crossrail achieved a step change” in the way safety engineering is managed on major infrastructure projects, prioritizing and assuring the highest levels of safety – the number one priority for any major railway infrastructure project.

The Program-Wide Safety Hazard Management System delivered a common set of processes across the entire organization, providing unprecedented visibility of program-wide safety through advanced dashboards. This system effectively addressed the challenge of disparate hazard management and reporting methods used by numerous delivery organizations across hundreds of contracts. At the peak of construction, a safety engineering community of 350 engineers collaborated within the system, reducing the average cost of engineering safety management by 60%. This 60% reduction was further illustrated by the fact that a task requiring approximately 5 days using conventional hazard management systems was completed in an average of 2 days with ComplyPro, demonstrating a significant productivity improvement for safety engineers.
