British Antarctic Survey
Cohesive optimizes the British Antarctic Survey’s polar operational readiness with IBM Maximo
Maintaining business continuity and resilience in one of the most distant and harsh environments in the world.
Summary
Cohesive implemented IBM Maximo for BAS delivering multiple capabilities including asset and work management, supply chain logistics, analytics and planning & scheduling. Deploying alongside our proprietary data replication (CDR) tool enables BAS to seamlessly and quickly synchronize Maximo data as soon as network becomes available which, due to the remote location is very intermittent, thus ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

The Challenge
As part of a five-year, multimillion-dollar joint US-UK research program, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has sent land-based teams, ships and aircraft to Antarctica — one of the most remote regions in the world — to better understand how climate change is accelerating the Thwaites Glacier’s rapid retreat. The stakes are enormous. If the glacier were to collapse, worldwide flooding would occur. In addition, the entire West Antarctica Ice Sheet could give way centuries later. Having a robust way to manage data remotely is mission critical.
To help ensure their continued leadership in polar exploration, BAS are steering an enterprise-wide transformation of their operational processes and systems, so they needed a system to unify asset maintenance, stock inventory and perform other functions and which users could access, create and process data in remote areas with poor connectivity.
The Solution
BAS selected the IBM® Maximo® Application, a market-leading solution for enterprise asset management to achieve this. The Maximo solution met virtually all of BAS’s solution requirements. It provides BAS with a robust integration framework that delivers multiple capabilities, including asset management; work management; supply chain logistics; analytics; planning and scheduling; and health, safety and environmental tracking. Also accessible through a user-friendly, web-based interface, it is certified to meet maritime standards.
They also engaged IBM Platinum Business Partner, Cohesive, to implement the system and help develop and deliver their strategy for enterprise asset management. Cohesive also migrated data to the new system, deployed our proprietary Cohesive Data Replication (CDR) software, and created new applications to handle cargo, crew and other information.
The Client Benefits
- IBM Maximo improves control over critical polar supplies by providing visibility into 48,500 inventory items
- IBM Maximo helps ensure preventive maintenance stays on schedule by tracking 9,790 active tasks
- IBM Maximo supports smoother, safer operations by enabling Antarctic and UK teams to share near real-time operational data
BAS saw Cohesive and the CDR tool’s ability to improve data processing and sharing in outlying regions as unparalleled. We delivered an application-agnostic, highly configurable tool designed specifically for the marine industry. The session-based data replication tool which was deployed, seamlessly and quickly synchronizes data, meaning there is minimal disruption to operations. If connectivity is lost, users can access a local version of the data. Then, when connectivity is regained, the solution quickly replicates data from the point the link was disrupted.
